Warriors Acquire Buddy Hield in Sign-and-Trade With 76ers

The Golden State Warriors are acquiring guard Buddy Hield in a sign-and-trade deal with the Philadelphia 76ers that guarantees him two years and $21 million, sources informed ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Thursday.

Hield, who turns 32 on Dec. 17, will receive $18 million in the first two years and a $3 million partial guarantee for 2026-27 along a player option for a nonguaranteed fourth year.

Golden State is sending Philadelphia a 2031 second-round pick it received from the Dallas Mavericks in the Klay Thompson sign-and-trade.

According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, with the cap expected to increase 10% in years 2-4, Hield’s future salary is comparable to the room mid-level exception.

The Warriors landed on pairing Hield with Stephen Curry to give the team the top two 3-point scorers over the past five seasons. Hield is a 40% 3-point shooter in his career.

In the 2023-24 season, Hield played a league-high 84 regular-season games (42 starts) for the 76ers and Indiana Pacers. He averaged 12.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 25.7 minutes per game.

Hield drained a season-high seven 3-pointers with the Indiana Pacers last season against the Toronto Raptors

Last season, in Indiana’s 132-131 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Nov. 22, he recorded a season-high 31 points on 12-of-17 (70.6%) shooting from the floor and a season-best seven 3-pointers.

Nonetheless, Hield struggled with his shooting in the playoffs outside of hitting six 3s in the 76ers’ season-ending loss to the New York Knicks in Game 6 of their first-round series.

In four postseason games with the Sixers, he averaged just 5.5 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 12.7 minutes per game while shooting 41.2% from the field and 46.2% from 3-point range.

However, his 3-point percentage is misleading. He missed his only attempt in Game 1, missed both attempts in Game 2, and missed one attempt in Game 3. The eight-year veteran scored just two points outside of Game 6.

With the Pacers, Hield made a career-high 288 3s on 677 attempts (42.5%) in the 2022-23 season. Since Golden State lives by the 3 and dies by the 3, this could be a solid sign-and-trade.

The Warriors also recently signed De’Anthony Melton and Kyle Anderson.
