SAN FRANCISCO ( KRON ) — A San Francisco business owner is speaking out after his store was severely damaged when a car that was involved in an apparent sideshow crashed into it. The owner says cars were spotted doing donuts in the intersection near Market Street Cycles before the crash.

The store has been on Market Street for 13 years, but the owner says he’s now considering closing down his store. Crime in the area, he said, along with this incident, is becoming too much.

“Just the crime and just the craziness is at an all-time high here,” said Market Street Cycles owner John McDonell. “It’s very discouraging. I might be done — this might be it for me.”

Scott Peterson's jury never got ‘complete picture' of what happened to Laci, LAIP says

McDonell is now dealing with what he says are thousands of dollars in damage after a car crashed into his store at around 3 a.m. Monday. According to a witness, a security guard across the street, a car was doing donuts at the time of the crash.

“The guy was doing donuts out in front and smashed the thing into the building and destroyed a lot of the building’s facade and heavily damaged both of my security gates,” said McDonell.

Circular tire tracks were visible Monday at the intersection.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, SFPD officers from the Southern Station responded to Market and Franklin streets at around 3 a.m. on a report of a car crashing into a building. When paramedics arrived, they treated the driver who had minor injuries.

For McDonell, this could be the last straw.

“It’s just one thing after another. This location was decent 13 years ago when I opened it up and there was a lot of construction in progress and businesses were supposed to be going in on all sides and housing,” said McDonell. “And then the city was also saying they were going to redevelop Mid-Market and put a lot of money into it — and then COVID happened — the neighborhood went south.”

For now, McDonell is now focused on rebuilding the historic building. He says the damage is going to cost between $15,000 and $20,000 to fix.

“I’m a third-generation San Franciscan, I live this city too,” he said. “But it’s very sad for me to see what’s happened to it.”

Impairment due to drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash at this time, according to SFPD. They are asking, anyone with information to contact SFPD anonymously.
