Warriors hope to find late draft success with single second round pick

The first round of the NBA draft starts Wednesday at 5pm, but barring a trade, the Warriors won't be picking in the first round.

The big picture: Golden State holds the 52nd overall pick ( acquired from Indiana during the Cory Joseph trade ) and will hope to find a diamond in the rough to complement their aging stars.

What to know: This year's draft class has been hailed as lacking serious star power, however, there could be some strong role players available in the second round.

Fun fact: The Warriors have historically had some success with draft picks in round two. Of course, the most notable is Draymond Green, who was selected 35th overall in 2012 and has since put together a Hall of Fame career.

• In 2019, Golden State took Eric Paschall 41st overall and he turned in a solid first season, earning him a spot on the NBA's all-rookie team. He also finished sixth in rookie of the year voting.

What we're watching: Yahoo's mock draft has the Warriors selecting UConn guard Cam Spencer; The Ringer's has them picking UCLA big man Adem Bona (he's drawn comparisons to Kevon Looney); and Bleacher Report has them nabbing a different UConn guard in Tristen Newton.

The bottom line: There is no consensus for Golden State in this slot. But once the draft wraps up, all eyes will be on free agency and what the Warriors will do with Klay Thompson .
