Tua Tagovailoa and Brock Purdy live in almost opposite corners of the football United States. Tagovailoa plays for the Miami Dolphins . Purdy plays for the San Francisco 49ers. However, despite their massive geographical difference, one NFL analyst believes he sees similarities.

Speaking on Wednesday’s edition of “ The Herd with Colin Cowherd ,” Colin Cowherd compared the two players.

“Same offense, same system… Both are accurate, nice guys, and coachable. Low ceilings,” he said.

Of course, at this point, both Purdy and Tagovailoa are pursuing their first Super Bowl. Both failed in 2023 due to the same reason: Patrick Mahomes. Looking at this fact, Cowherd appeared to lump both into the same bucket.

However, both are quite different in one key area. Tagovailoa has been labeled to have a low ceiling after four seasons in the NFL. Purdy, meanwhile, has been labeled to have a low ceiling after a season and a half, including a Super Bowl run.

At this point, the sample size of Tagovailoa should be satisfactory to make a reasonable conclusion. Purdy, meanwhile, is still quite new to the game. He has played just one full season for the 49ers and in that year, he nearly won it all.

Brock Purdy’s 2024 performance set to tell all

Until Purdy has a step back, one cannot fully place him in any bucket.

So far, we can’t claim the 49ers quarterback to have a ceiling because we haven’t seen him hit one and fall. Of course, he doesn’t need to hit rock bottom to declare his ceiling. However, if he continues to get stuck at a certain level like Tagovailoa, that is when the talk of ceilings can be had with any remotely factual belief.

For example, Tagovailoa has repeatedly failed to throw for 30 touchdowns throughout his career over four years. As such, one could reasonably say his ceiling is below 30 touchdowns.

At the end of the 2024 season, fans, analysts, and pundits will have a clearer picture of who Purdy is.

Purdy will either fall short of winning the Super Bowl again or win it. If he falls short, then fans have three straight seasons of (potentially) deep playoff runs with nothing to show for it to point at.

Statistically, if he fails to improve this season, his ceiling will be clear. However, if he improves beyond those numbers, Purdy’s ceiling remains unknown.

Meanwhile, Tua Tagovailoa is just trying to win a playoff game for the Dolphins.
