GIG Car Share will cease service in the Bay Area by Dec. 27, according to an email to members Wednesday.

The Oakland-based company allows users to pick up and drop off signature blue and black cars for short trips around the East Bay and San Francisco charged per minute, hour or day. Dec. 27 will also be the last day that members can use credits toward paying for trips.

"Despite our best efforts, there have been challenges -- primarily around decreased demand, rising operational costs, and changes to consumer commuting patterns," the company said in the email.

Many users took to social media to express their disappointment with the end of the program. In the Bay Area, the company serves Emeryville, Berkeley, Oakland, Alameda, Albany, El Cerrito and San Francisco.

GIG Car Share will also cease operations in Seattle, the only other metropolitan area currently served by the company.
