DETROIT — The Guardians addressed their pitching depth issues by acquiring starting pitcher Alex Cobb from the San Francisco Giants.

The Guardians are dealing 19-year-old left-handed pitcher Jacob Bresnahan and a player-to-be-named later, according to a source.

Cobb, 36, was an All-Star last year, posting a 3.87 ERA in 151 2/3 innings. He hasn't pitched in 2024 since undergoing hip surgery, though he has been nearing a return despite multiple setbacks during his rehab. Cobb was on track for a return in May before shoulder irritation pushed any possible return date back several weeks.

Cobb is a former teammate of Guardians manager Stephen Vogt . He also pitched the 2013 American League Wild Card Game when he was with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Monday night, the Guardians acquired outfielder Lane Thomas from the Washington Nationals.

    Alex Cobb contract

Cobb has a base salary of $3.225 million for the 2024 season and can be a free agent this winter.

    Alex Cobb stats

Cobb owns a career 3.85 ERA across 12 major league seasons, mostly with the Rays.
