49ers QB struggles with turnovers for 2nd-straight practice

Turnover have been a theme for 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy in his first two padded practices.

San Francisco on Monday opened their padded training camp sessions and Purdy tossed three interceptions during the team portion of practice. On Tuesday he got off to a hot start, but closed with four interceptions on his final five throws. The exact nature of the interceptions doesn’t particularly matter. Two days in a row of turnover problems is enough to at least put it on the map. It’s not enough to cause any panic.

For now this continues to be a non-issue for the 49ers’ quarterback, but each day it comes up will be one step closer to it becoming something more noteworthy.

Purdy last season threw 11 interceptions in 16 games. That number can improve, as can his 3.2 percent turnover-worthy play rate issued by Pro Football Focus.

It’s not that it was a huge problem. It’s certainly an area he can improve this season. If there’s any cause for concern early in camp it’s that he’s gone the opposite direction the club would hope he’d go, but the bigger deal will be whether he improves when the games count.

His practice interceptions can all be forgiven if they lead to him taking better care of the ball during the regular season. Ideally he’d start limiting the turnovers in practice, but there’s an opportunity to learn from those mistakes. Purdy just has to execute in regular season games to ensure the misses and giveaways in practice don’t translate to the gridiron on Sundays.
