Willie Brown thinks Harris should keep people ‘guessing’ about her ideology

Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown offered his advice for Vice President Kamala Harris as she battles former President Donald Trump , including keeping people "guessing" about her ideology.

Harris and Brown dated in the 1990s, and around the time the two were in a relationship, she was appointed to two California boards. Brown has also supported Harris in subsequent races. The former mayor told Politico that while he is no longer directly in touch with the vice president, he has several suggestions as she seeks to win the presidency.

Brown said that President Joe Biden should step down to allow her to show how she would be as president prior to the election, to avoid making her identity her central campaign pitch, and to embrace her unclear ideological tilt.

“If she keeps people continually guessing, then she can adjust the interpretation of your guess every time she sees you,” Brown said.

Brown also mentioned his concerns about Harris, prior to Biden's disastrous June debate that served as the catalyst for Democrats replacing him. He worried the vice president had "the Hillary syndrome," referring to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's apparent likability problems, adding he was concerned "people don't like her" and that it would not be something that could be fixed.

The former San Francisco mayor also joked at that time that if the Biden-Harris ticket lost, Harris would be able to find a job because "you need a black woman on every godd*** corporate board in America!"

Harris's relationship with Brown and how it sparked her career in politics, beginning in the Bay Area, has been a point of conversation now that the vice president is under the scrutiny of a presidential candidate.

Prior to serving as vice president, Harris was a senator representing California from 2017 to 2021 and served as California attorney general from 2011 to 2017. Prior to her statewide jobs, Harris was the San Francisco district attorney from 2004 to 2011.
