Stockton man arrested on animal cruelty charge after dog was allegedly shot with a BB gun
A Stockton man is facing animal cruelty and weapons charges after videos depicting a caged dog being shot at with a BB gun surfaced on social media, police said. Maurice Smith, 47, was arrested and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail Tuesday on suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, carrying a loaded handgun, and cruelty to animals, jail records show.

Lathrop man killed Sunday night, police say
LATHROP, Calif. — A man was killed early Sunday morning in San Joaquin County, officials said. The Lathrop Police Department was dispatched around 1:13 a.m. to a reported disturbance on Sunol Street, west of Interstate 5. Upon arriving officers found a man with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to the hospital where he died, Lathrop police said.

An illegal immigrant who was deported three times has been charged with setting the California fire that killed a mother and her two young children, according to police. Jose Carmen Cardona, 59, was arrested Friday and charged in the June 25 camper fire in Stockton that killed 32-year-old Lisbeth Gutierrez-Salazar and her two sons — Juan Gutierrez-Salazar, 10, and Julian Cardona-Gutierrez, 7, San Joaquin County prosecutors said in a release.
