( KRON ) — A man was shot and killed near Santa Teresa Public Library early Thursday morning, according to the San Jose Police Department. Another victim was also shot. Police said she is expected to survive.

Officers responded to the 5900 block of Liska Lane at 4:49 a.m. on a report of shots fired and a car collision.

Arriving officers at the scene found a car that caught fire after colliding with a residence’s garage. Police said a victim, a man, was stuck inside the car. Police and fire officials put out the fire and removed the man away from the engulfed car.

Upon getting him out of the car, police noticed the driver was suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts, the victim was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

Detectives with the San Jose PD homicide unit responded to the scene and are actively investigating the incident. During the investigation, police said they “discovered” a second victim, a woman who was suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

SJPD said the shooting suspect fled before police arrived. The motive and circumstances are under investigation as of this report.

The identity of the victim remained withheld. Coroners will confirm the victim’s identity after notifying their next of kin.

This is San Jose’s 18th homicide in 2024.

I remember the days when San Jose averaged 20 murders per year and was regarded as the safest big city in America. We now hit that number by July
