Askarov had one year remaining on his entry-level contract before he would've become an RFA.

The 2020 11th-overall pick requested a trade from the Nashville Predators after reports said he wouldn't report to training camp. When asked if Askarov would be okay if he spent time with the San Jose Barracuda, Grier said he doesn't expect any issues.

"Yeah, we talked with [Askarov]. We had a good talk with him and his agent about our plan for him and how highly we think of him," Grier told reporters. "We'll see how it goes in training camp. If he has to report to the Barracuda, I don't think he'll have any issue with it."

Askarov looks to be the Sharks goalie of the future.
