( KRON ) — A security guard shot at a shoplifting suspect’s dog at a Target Sunday afternoon, the San Leandro Police (SLPD) said. Around 4:15 p.m., police responded to a report of shots fired inside the Target at 15555 East 14th St.

Upon investigation, an armed guard with Target’s contracted security discharged his firearm while an in-progress theft was happening, SLPD said. The suspect, accompanied by his pet Pit Bull, tried to leave the store with a stolen backpack.

Security approached the suspect to stop him. The dog was let loose and aggressively ran towards security, according to police. In response, the armed guard fired two shots at the pet.

Both rounds hit the floor at Target, and neither the dog nor any individuals were injured. The shoplifting suspect was taken into custody and later released.

SLPD said the security guard’s use of his firearm was “not done in a negligent or reckless manner.”
