South County land acquisition to help protect from floods, tidal surges
A recently-acquired slice of coastal land near Watsonville will help protect South County and its farmland from flooding, coastal surges and other impacts of global warming. The Land Trust of Santa Cruz County announced Tuesday that it has purchased 247 acres at Beach Ranch, where the Pajaro River meets the Pacific Ocean.
Volunteers spruce up fairgrounds park
A large group of volunteers showed up to the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds on Aug. 9 to help bring the Paddy Smith Park back to life. Tucked between the JJ Crosetti and the Fire Arts buildings, the sprawling garden space once featured a majestic river stone waterfall, flowering plants and level lawn that served as a quiet respite area at the fairgrounds.
