40 Prado opens cooling center through July Fourth weekend, citing ‘dangerously high’ heat

The Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo has opened its cooling center through Independence Day weekend as “dangerously high temperatures” turn up the heat across the county.

40 Prado Homeless Services Center will open its doors to guests who are in good standing with CAPSLO between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. through Sunday, according to a news release from the nonprofit.

Guests must be willing to review a simple screening assessment to access services if they still need to enroll, according to the release.

Secure kennels for pets and emotional support animals with rabies vaccinations are provided, and service animals may enter the cooling center.

Inside the cooling center, guests will be provided an indoor space with seating, air conditioning, and full access to Prado’s day center services such as showers, hygiene items, no-cook bags and laundry, according to the release.

Currently, the organization needs donations of the following items:

• Bottled water & sports drinks

• Non-perishable snacks

• Large backpacks, tents, and sleeping bags

• New (or cleaned) socks and new (or cleaned) work gloves

• Gift cards (for gas, clothing, and food)
