School’s Back: TxDOT urges drivers to watch for children and school buses on our busy roads
As schools across the state prepare to welcome students back to school, TxDOT is launching its Be Safe. Drive Smart. Back-to-School campaign, urging drivers to remain vigilant in school zones and around buses. With school zone flashers already in operation, the importance of cautious driving is paramount to protect our children and prevent tragic accidents. In 2023 alone, Texas experienced 748 school zone crashes and 2,523 school bus-related collisions, resulting in 11 fatalities and 63 serious injuries. The primary causes were preventable, such as speeding, distracted driving and failing to yield. With these alarming statistics, Tx-DOT emphasizes the need for increased...

Thoughts on the second week of the Summer Olympics
Well, I guess I have had my fix for watching the Olympics for another four years. It had some memorable moments to remember and enough exciting events to make it enjoyable to watch. The one point that stood out for me was how close some of the track running events were. Having been a timer at races back in the stone-age, where one person picked first place, another picked second, and another picked third and so on, the close finish of the Olympic 100-meter dash would have been impossible. Eight runners crossed the finish line at the same time. The...
Teaching friends to fly fish for Redbreasted Sunfish
As usual, it’s a hot summer in Central Texas, and it’s getting hotter every year. For weeks, I was bass fishing on Bastrop Lake until the sun scorched us. It was time to move to Plan B. Lake Dunlap in New Braunfels is one of the series of Guadalupe River lakes. The lake looks more like a river than a lake. It’s narrow and surrounded by many huge trees. Unfortunately, several years ago, the dam that held the water in Lake Dunlap broke and the lake disappeared. Only the original Guadalupe River remained. Finally after several years, the dam was repaired....

A New Braunfels man is set to receive 400th specially- adapted home from nonprofit Homes For Our Troops. Alberto Flores joined the military as an Infantryman to support his family, and quickly fell in love with the camaraderie and brotherhood he shared with his fellow Marines. On May 12, 2005, Lance Corporal Flores was on his second combat deployment with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines in Ramadi, Iraq when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device. He sustained severe damage to his right leg. Airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany where he spent ten days, Flores was transported to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland....
Exploring Nature: Superb Salvia
, I have enough whitetailed deer around my place to make it impossible to grow a garden without a high fence around it. Otherwise, the deer gobble up everything as soon as it sprouts. Unfortunately, they do not eat enough grass to make it unnecessary to mow, so I still have that chore to take care of. Lately, I have noticed twin fawns following their mother around. They’re a little past the Bambi-cute stage, and it won’t be long before they are mature adults. I have done some research and am considering planting salvia in my yard. I am told it is easy...
Ryder Grimes to play Cheatham Street Aug. 17
, Following his rise to the No. 1 spot on the Texas charts, independent country artist Ryder Grimes will play Cheatham Street Warehouse on Aug. 17. Grimes’ latest single, “8 Seconds at a Time,” marks the artist’s second consecutive No. 1 hit. A native of the northeast Texas town of Poetry, Grimes has put in the work to grow his fanbase across the state by writing songs that blend heartfelt lyrics with a traditional country sound. As most Texans can guess, “8 Seconds at a Time” is a song about rodeo life. “The lyrics describe the pain of losing, but in the end...

Rattlers look to take next step in 2024

THE ECONOMIST: Save Our State
Comparing the performance of state economies is very difficult. There are no sophisticated timers and cameras to identify winners as in an Olympic sprint. Instead, many different lists are released which rely on a variety of methods and criteria. One such measure, compiled annually by CNBC, has been around for quite a while and takes a broader look than the others. As such, it tends to garner a lot of attention. This year’s assessment saw Texas advancing several spots, but the good news is not all good. Over the prior three years, Texas fell to fourth, then fifth, and then sixth....
Calm returns to Wall Street, and stocks bounce back after their worst drop in nearly 2 years
A rising tide swept stocks higher, and calm returned to Wall Street after Japan’s market soared earlier Tuesday to claw back much of the losses from its worst day since 1987. The S&P 500 climbed 1% to break a brutal threeday losing streak. It had tumbled a bit more than 6% on a raft of concerns, including worries the Federal Reserve had pressed the brakes too hard for too long on the U.S. economy through high interest rates in order to beat inflation. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 294 points, or 0.8%, while the Nasdaq composite gained 1%. Stocks of all...
TXST-UIW pipeline remains strong through relationships
With Texas State entering the 2024 season with the expectations of winning their first conference championship since 2008, the foundation of Head Coach G.J. Kinne’s 2022 Incarnate Word Cardinals football team can still be found within the Bobcat roster. Kinne, in his first year as head coach of UIW, led the team to 12-2 record in 2022 while capturing the Southland Conference Championship and a Football Championship Subdivision semifinal berth in the playoffs. “That was a real special year,” Kinne said. “Anytime you win 12 games, it’s a big accomplishment.” During the Cardinals playoff run, Kinne was hired to lead the Texas State...
Six vehicle crash shuts down I-35 on Wednesday
A six vehicle crash, including three 18-wheelers, held up traffic on northbound Interstate 35 for almost three hours on Wednesday morning. No fatalities were reported; however, two people were transported from the scene with minor injuries. According to the San Marcos Police Department, the accident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. on August 7 near mile marker 208. “The preliminary investigation suggests a passenger vehicle was rear ended by one of the 18 wheelers after braking suddenly,” a description from SMPD Public Safety Communications Specialist Khameyah Taylor said. “The second 18 wheeler hit the brakes and swerved to avoid the collision. The second 18 wheeler was then struck from behind by a third 18 wheeler. Two additional passenger vehicles were unable to avoid the collision.” At one point, all northbound lanes of I-35 were closed and detoured to exit 208 while police investigated the crash and crews worked to remove debris from the roadway. By 7:45 a.m., at least one lane of traffic was open causing significant delays throughout San Marcos. All lanes were reopened by 9:10 a.m.
The Fed’s high rates spur fear of slowdown, yet recession signals have so far proved wrong
The turmoil shaking global financial markets reflects a sudden fear that the Federal Reserve may have held its key interest rate too high for too long, heightening the risk of a U.S. recession. Economists and Wall Street traders now expect the Fed to cut its benchmark rate, which influences borrowing costs for consumers and businesses, much faster than they thought just a week ago. Chair Jerome Powell has often stressed that the Fed could quickly lower rates if it decides that it’s needed to bolster the economy. Yet the periodic fear of a forthcoming recession has been a hallmark of the post-pandemic...
