PFC Kristian Menchaca Proclamation at Caldwell County Commissioners Court
For those who knew U.S. Army PFC Kristian Menchaca personally, it is nearly impossible to believe he has been gone for 18 years. Caldwell County Commissioners Court Judge Hoppy Haden and County Commissioners issued a Proclamation commemorating the anniversary of his death in Iraq on June 16, 2006. Menchaca was a Graduate of the Gary Job Corps Center, then joined the Army assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade 101st Airborne Division. During an insurgent attack on a checkpoint south of Baghdad, Spec. David Babineau was killed and PFC Thomas Tucker and Menchaca were taken prisoners. According to Army sources Tucker and Menchaca were brutally tortured and killed. Menchaca was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and Prisoner of War Medals.

Thoughts on the first week of the Summer Olympics
As a sports fan, it is a busy week watching the Olympics. While the track events will start later, most fans here in the United States focus on swimming, basketball, and gymnastics. These three sports get the most publicity and coverage. Since a sports fan can watch the Olympics almost 24 hours a day over several stations other sports are covered. Some of the sports are not as popular in the United States and while sports like swimming, gymnastics, and basketball are usually sports at most colleges and universities in the athletic department, the others are often club sports in...

Exploring Nature: Frogs
, , One thing has been missing from my neighborhood for several years now — the melodious croaking of frogs. Not so many years ago, I could count on hearing a frog serenade after every heavy rain. There was a marshy area not too far from my house where frogs lived in noisy abundance. No more. I haven’t seen or heard a frog in several years. And I’m not alone. The frog population is falling worldwide. Prime culprits are fungal infection, climate change and habitat loss. To be more precise, the fungal pathogen is called Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, or Bd for short. It has devastated...

Wife chooses to travel alone instead of with family
DEAR ABBY: Fifteen years into our marriage, I’m struggling to honor my wife’s desire for space and independence. I can be a hopeless romantic, and my attempts to communicate my desire for trustworthy and healthy boundaries have actually made it worse. We had a romantic origin story in a foreign country, and we haven’t had a vacation together with the kids in 10 years. She enjoys going on solo vacations so she can be “free” to have adventures where she can get attention from other men. I trust her and love her deeply, but her returning to the exact location where we...
