Freeloading dad wants to add a freeloading wife
DEAR ABBY: My father has depended on my mother (and me) for money for as long as I can remember. It wasn’t because he was unable to work, but because he was lazy and had a drinking and gambling problem. My parents eventually divorced, and my father moved in with his sister (my aunt). She died in 2016, which would have made my father homeless, so my sister and I bought our aunt’s home from our cousins so he could stay there. Fast-forward: Our father is planning to remarry. We do not love paying for him to live rent-free in our...

How to make your Texas home more energy efficient and get money from the government
As Texas summer temperatures rise, so do energy bills because air conditioners are working hard against the brutal heat. In some cases, they’re working extra to cool homes that are leaky and under-insulated. Old appliances also use more power than newer and more efficient ones. Improving how well a house maintains its temperature and converting more appliances to run efficiently on electricity can lower bills, reduce harmful air emissions and make homes more comfortable, energy experts say. Federal tax incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act can help homeowners reduce their tax bill. Additional federal rebates — at least some will be applied...
Exploring Nature: Killer Skeeters
, keeters Mosquitoes are killing lots of native birds in Hawaii. To be precise, female mosquitoes carrying avian malaria are the culprits. That’s because only female mosquitoes bite and feed on blood. Males subsist on plant juices, nectar and plant sap. They do not even have the mouth parts to suck blood. Birds especially at risk are honeycreepers, a beautiful species found in high elevations once too cool for mosquitoes to breed. However, with a warming climate, mosquitoes that once lived in lowland areas are now migrating into these higher elevations. One bite from an infected mosquito can kill an adult honeycreeper. How to stop...
Colton Corner’s: The return of College Football video games
, , The College Football 25 video game, which is scheduled to be released Monday, is perhaps one of the most anticipated video games in recent memory. Since the release of NCAA Football 14 and the cancellation of the series, folks have saved their old Xbox 360s in order to still play the game, which has made a mark on many a college football fan. One of the reasons for the cancellation of the series is due to the lawsuit brought upon former college athletes who sued Electronic Arts for using their Name, Image and Likeness without permission or compensation brought up...

Toss in a live band, and the show is certain to be long-remembered. “Shakespeare is an amazingly polarizing subject,” said Jones, who also serves as the...
Gardening during drought
, uring the hot summer days and in times of drought in Texas, gardeners struggle to keep their landscape alive while being good stewards of our limited water supply. To accomplish this goal, the two most important things to consider are what we plant as well as how we water those plants. Using native- or highly-adapted plants in the landscape is paramount. Because these perennials and shrubs are accustomed to our weather as well as our soil, they will thrive with less water. As an added bonus, they will require little or no fertilizer and be less susceptible to disease than...

Runners and their compulsion over time and distance
After many years of running and putting on races. I have come to the conclusion that runners are, for the most part, a compulsive group. They tend to generally be obsessive about three things. One is the distance they run, another is the time they run and the third is the time and distance they run. A runner or walker may mention that they run for fun and the distance and time are not important. There may be a few runners and walkers that actually are not concerned about the distance they covered or the time it took them. This...
