Lockhart Grandmother Uses Retirement Funds to Give Out 4,000 Backpacks to Local Students
In Lockhart, the community experience is often rooted in simple acts of generosity. This is evidenced by Connie S. Amaya's initiative, a grandmother using her retirement funds to support local students. For the sixth consecutive year, Amaya has organized a backpack giveaway, now under the umbrella of the Connie S. Amaya Education Aid Foundation, which she established this spring. The annual Free Back-to-School Backpack Drive has become a fixture, handing out essential school supplies to students gearing up for the new academic year.

Integral Care, the mental health authority of Travis County, has received $220,000 from the county to train an additional 2,000 people in the Youth Mental Health First Aid program from now through December 2025. The program also has received money through the St. David's Foundation and the state's Health and Human Services Commission. Integral Care is partnering with Austin Public Health to promote the program.
