Suspected DUI driver chased down by witnesses after San Rafael crash

( KRON ) — An 18-year-old man is accused of driving under the influence and crashing into another vehicle before attempting to flee the scene on foot, according to the San Rafael Police Department. The collision occurred just after 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday night.

Police responded to reports of a crash at the intersection of Third and B streets. Officers learned that a vehicle traveling westbound on Third Street at a high rate of speed ran a red light at the B Street intersection and broadsided another vehicle that was going through a green light on B Street, San Rafael PD said. According to police, two pedestrians were also crossing the street at the time and had to run out of the way to avoid being hit by the red-light runner.

After the crash, police said the suspect driver got out of his car and started to run away. Witnesses in the area chased down the suspect and had him returned to the scene to await the arrival of officers.

The two occupants of the victim vehicle that was broadsided sustained minor injuries in the collision and were transported to a local hospital, San Rafael PD said.

The 18-year-old suspect, who had minor injuries, was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and did not pass a field sobriety test, according to police. The man was arrested and booked into jail for felony DUI resulting in an injury collision and felony hit-and-run.
