Canton Restaurateur Faces Charges for Allegedly Filing False Tax Returns
Yesterday, a Gilford, N.H., man, formerly of Canton, Mass., faced charges of filing false tax returns, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Remigijus Mikelenas, 55, the ex-proprietor of a café and a juice bar in Canton, is accused of not reporting over $3.5 million in gross receipts, skirting more than $860,000 in federal income taxes.

More School Buses Needed in Manchester
The Manchester School District says they are bringing student transportation in-house after previously relying on outside contractors, which led to delays and canceled routes. But the district now needs to buy up to 10 more school buses after learning that the Manchester Transit Authority had been providing buses for athletic charters and other extracurricular activities. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Gillis said funding for the buses will be ready soon. The district hopes to have a finalized purchase plan for the school board’s approval at its Sept. 9 meeting, which is open to the public.
New Hampshire is destroying PFAS in fire-fighting foam
By the end of August, New Hampshire plans to collect and destroy 10,000 gallons of PFAS-laden foam from local fire departments. Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (or AFFF)has long been used by fire departments, airports and the military to combat flammable liquid fires. It is linked with the increased PFAS contamination in groundwater and subsequent health issues in surrounding communities. PFAS, often called “forever chemicals,” have been linked to cancer, low birth weights, and other health issues.

Gold & Pawn on South Willow Street in Manchester, New Hampshire, Jenelle Marie, got to know Donald, a 90-year-old New Hampshire veteran. Donald came into the pawn shop with some gold jewelry he wanted to pawn so he could pay his medical bills for his wife, who was recently diagnosed with dementia.
