SANFORD, Maine — Police are investigating after a 3-year-old boy suffered a gunshot injury to his hand during an incident at his home Tuesday afternoon.

Police said they were called to 13 Shaw Road around 4:28 p.m. by a neighbor who heard the sound of a gunshot. When officers and EMS arrived, they found the boy with a gunshot wound to his left hand. Police said the boy was with his father.

The child, police said, was transported to Maine Medical Center, where he is being treated for his injury.

Police said the pistol was recovered inside the home.

Major Matthew Gagné stated the department's Criminal Investigation Division is on scene and is investigating the incident.

"This case is still in the early stages of the investigation, and the public is not at any risk," Gagné stated in a press release.
