Historic Waterfront Home on the Market in Maine Is a Summer Vacationer's Paradise

Some of my favorite childhood memories come from family vacations to the lake country in central Maine. My extended family would rent a few cabins on a beautiful lake out there in the summertime, and we'd spend a week swimming, kayaking, hiking in the local mountains, and enjoying each other's company. Though Maine can be icy in the winters, there's nothing more peaceful or idyllic than a lakeside retreat in Maine during the summertime.
Perhaps that's why this beautiful historic home in southern Maine speaks to me so much - it's a familiar nostalgic throwback to my childhood. This beautiful waterfront home in Sanford, Maine, is selling for less than half a million dollars, and while it's a home for all seasons, I see it as a true summer vacationer's paradise!
Maine realtor @jasonclark4940 brings us this gorgeous waterfront beauty, located at 422 Main Street in Sanford, Maine. This classic New England home was originally built back in 1870, and though it's been updated and well-cared for over the past 150+ years, it still retains much of its simple, charming original character, especially with its preserved original features like that enormous brick fireplace !
According to the home's Redfin listing , it's built along the banks of the Mousam River in Sanford's Springvale village, located less than an hour's drive south of Portland. However, in the comments, Jason Clark noted that the river waters "form a pond" in the section behind the house, so swimmers won't have to battle against rushing river currents if they want to go for a leisurely dip!
The historic home is graced with a lush garden full of perennial flowers , elegant waterfront views, a large wooden deck, and a sprawling backyard with fun features like a fire pit and a small dock leading to the water. You can kayak right up to the backyard, swim in the cool, quiet waters, and fish off the dock to your heart's content. During the day, you can lounge back in a hammock or sip cold drinks on the deck, and at night, you and yours can gather under the stars around a roaring fire. This property would be absolutely heavenly during the summertime!
But the average homebuyer is looking for a forever home, not a vacation home. Thankfully, this home still has plenty of appeal when the days grow shorter and colder. Obviously, the home's enormous fireplace is perfect for thawing out any winter chill, and Jason Clark commented that the home is equipped with oil baseboard heating, too. Additionally, he suggests that the pond would be ideal for ice skating when it freezes over in the winter (though obviously skaters should still take all the usual precautions before venturing out onto the ice). I can only imagine how cozy and comforting this home would look during the holiday season!
A Forever Home With Historic Charm
This lovely house has aged like fine wine, and its charms are undeniable. Between its old-timey yet airy aesthetics, gorgeous waterfront plot, and reasonable proximity to Maine's biggest city, it's the perfect home for anyone dreaming of a rustic New England getaway that's not too far removed from the rest of civilization. At $490,000, this three-bed, one-and-a-half bath abode isn't the cheapest home by Maine real estate standards, but its historic character and lush, idyllic grounds are well worth the price.
The home is listed under Jason Clark, who works for Coldwell Banker. If you're interested in this home, you can reach out to him through the Redfin listing linked above, or contact him via his Coldwell Banker page here!
