Can you remember when you were thirstiest? Maybe it was when you were younger going to play basketball with your friends. Maybe it was when you took a drive.

My thirstiest time was when I was turkey hunting.

We had just moved to Texas and I was hunting on public land. In my excitement I had forgotten to study the map and, after an unsuccessful hunt, I got lost.

After hiking for two hours and being no closer to my car than I was when I started, panic began to set in. The only thing I thought to do was call my wife and ask her to pray. God heard our prayers because I was able to open my car door 30 minutes later.

It was then I realized I hadn’t had anything to drink that entire morning. The only thing I had was heated water that had baked in the Texas sun. I drank it like it was the last bottle of water on earth.

It is only when we are confronted without thirst that we realize just how really thirsty we are.

Jesus, speaking in John 7 at the festival of the Jews, confronted the thirst of the people. At a time when every Jewish male in the nation of Israel, by God’s law, had to attend the feast, He pondered, maybe for the first time, the spiritual thirst that all of mankind shares.

Only the Lord can satisfy the spiritual thirst of the heart. Oh, how we try to avoid the Water of Life for cheap substitutes. We fill our houses with goods, our bank accounts with money, and our lives with distractions so that we do not have to ponder the depth of our spiritual thirst.

All of us are longing and looking for something to fill that thirst, that void within our human heart. All too often we give up thinking there is ever a source of satisfying refreshment.

Maybe today, the thirst is still ravaging you, you have tried countless times to quench it, all to no avail. Jesus is waiting. He can satisfy you.

None of the things of the world can ever fill the void that only God can. Will you drink of the Water of Life? Will you finally surrender to Jesus and let Him satisfy you once and for all?
