A “sweet” senior dog was rescued after he was left outside and nearly put down.

And soon, Dasher the 12-year-old pup will need a new home, according to a North Carolina animal shelter .

“His little journey this week was a sad one but nothing is sad now,” Carolina Animal Rescue & Adoption wrote June 27 on Facebook. “He is safe and we genuinely love him so much already. He is quirky and sweet.”

Dasher is expected to go up for adoption the second week of July. His second chance comes after he experienced days of “pure chaos,” the Sanford shelter wrote on social media and told McClatchy News in a June 28 email.

“Little man’s life was left at the hands of someone handling affairs for his owner who recently moved out of state (due to a major health issue),” the rescue wrote. “This person responsible for Dasher’s well being, contacted various organization and people — finding no one to take him in.”

After the person exhausted her options, she reportedly turned to a shelter. The facility, which wasn’t named in the Facebook post, was full and said it would have to euthanize Dasher.

“At one point Dasher had a loving family and was now facing death with no one he knew by his side,” CARA wrote. “Can you imagine how stressful and confusing this could have been?”

The person had to leave town, and Dasher was put outside his former home. He was watched through a security camera as his euthanasia appointment approached.

“When we found out that he was in such a panicked state and not even confined to a safe fence (open backyard) we drove to pick him up,” CARA wrote. “We arrive and see his little tiny eyes staring through some bushes.”

Now at CARA, Dasher is described as a “well mannered” and intelligent mixed-breed dog. He was scheduled to get new medicine July 1 but is otherwise believed to be OK for an older pup.

“We learned after we rescued him, that he has a seizure disorder,” the rescue organization wrote. “We were not given medication for him that he was (supposed) to be taking routinely.”

CARA is in Sanford, a roughly 40-mile drive southwest from Raleigh. More details about its adoption process can be found at cara-nc.org .

“There are just too many animals overwhelming the shelter system and not enough resources for people to use when they find themselves with no options,” the rescue wrote. “We think about this often and feel helpless more often, but we can focus right now on how happy we are to have this guy with us.”
