Courtesy of Santa Clarita’s Olive Branch Theatricals, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” and “MATTY: An Evening with Christy Mathewson” are set to be performed live this summer.

In the first show, a diverse group of six preteens compete for a once-in-a-lifetime spelling bee. As they spell out a series of words, the tweens openly share touching and humorous stories about their homes, all the while hoping that the “ding” that signals a spelling mistake won’t be heard. Out of six spellers, one emerges victorious.

A riotous ride through a delightful den of comedic genius, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee includes audience participation. Despite its small cast, it promises to be an exciting and entertaining comedy.

Eddie Frierson’s Matty: An Evening with Christy Mathewson will take the stage following the Spelling Bee.

Christy Mathewson was a first-rate American hero who paved the way for baseball to become a national pastime for a whole generation of fans. He was a hall-of-fame pitcher for the New York Giants from 1900 to 1916, as well as a gentleman, philosopher and inspiration to countless others.

A college-educated all-American farm boy from the golden age of baseball, Mathewson was a multi-talented player with a home-cooked sense of humor and was perhaps the first big baseball legend from the United States. He was a war hero, coach, sports writer and perhaps the first prominent athlete to serve as a product spokesperson; in addition to his still-impressive baseball records, he wrote books for boys, performed in Vaudeville and produced a film.

You can love Matty even if you’re not a sports fan, so be quick because this one is leaving for New York in the fall.

Performances for “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” are set to be from July 6-21, while “MATTY: An Evening with Christy Mathewson ” runs from July 26-28.

The Olive Branch Theatricals an innovative pop-up theater located in Valencia Town Center, is scheduled to host both productions. For details on tickets, click here .

Please Note: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee musical is rated PG-13 and is a satire of stereotypes. There is a song about puberty and other young adult-themed jokes throughout. May not be appropriate for audience members under the age of 13.
