The fire was first reported at 11:47 a.m. Friday, on the 24100 block of Newhall Avenue at the former home of the silent era movie star.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and County Fire Engine 73 were first to arrive and reported smoke showing from the area of the mansion.

Upon arrival to the mansion and museum at the top of the hill, crews worked to stop the fire which had spread around one of the buildings next to the mansion.

Amid temperatures in excess of 110 degrees, firefighters stopped the blaze from claiming the buildings.

Caretakers expressed their thanks for the quick work amid their worries.

“I’ve been here for 11 years and this is the first time we’ve had a fire in the park, at least as long as I can remember,” said local historian Evan Decker speaking on camera with KNN.
