    Lancaster Salvage Yard Fire Burns Over 1,500 Vehicles, Sends Pollutants Into Air

    Travelers north of Santa Clarita may have seen a billowing cloud of black smoke spitting pollutants into the air off the 14 Freeway on Thursday, as thousands of cars burned in a salvage yard fire.

    More than 1,500 vehicles on 10 acres of a Lancaster salvage yard have been burned as of Friday morning, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

    The blaze, named the Green Incident, was reported just after 3 p.m. Thursday at a 20-acre recycling center and salvage yard at 421 W Avenue I near Sierra Highway in Lancaster.

    Initial reports from the LACoFD stated that approximately 300 crushed vehicles were involved in the blaze, which required more than 180 firefighters.

    Air quality in Santa Clarita is unhealthy for sensitive groups, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 57.

    There is no fire in the Santa Clarita Valley as of Friday morning.
