SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Santa Fe City Councilors passed a controversial median safety bill on an 8-1 vote but delayed its implementation by six months. The bill, introduced by Mayor Alan Webber and Councilor Pilar Faulkner, will ban people from sitting, standing, or lying on medians less than three feet wide.

After hours of public comment, advocacy groups and residents said the bill will impact the rights of unhoused people. The vote came on the eve of Thursday’s special session where Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham proposed a similar state law but the bill never went to debate.

The Santa Fe bill goes into effect in February.
