Governor Newsom Opposes Proposed Casino Near Windsor
The Koi Nation’s proposed casino outside of Windsor is now being opposed by Governor Newsom’s office. Matthew Lee, the state’s senior adviser for tribal negotiations, issued a letter urging the US Department of the Interior to reject the Koi project. Lee wrote the governor “is concerned that these specific projects are proceeding in a manner that would sidestep the State, ignore the concerns of tribal governments and other local communities, and stretch the ‘restored lands’ exception beyond its legal limits — while failing to adequately consider whether there might be a better way.” Lee also called for a rejection of a parallel bid by another Lake County tribe, which would build a casino and housing project in Vallejo.
