A fire at a large two-story apartment building in Santa Rosa on Thursday was possibly caused by a candle burning on a dresser, fire officials said.

The Santa Rosa Fire Department was dispatched at 7:35 a.m. Thursday to a possible structure fire at an apartment building located at 825 Russell Ave.

The first fire crew that arrived at the scene said they had found the apartment building with signs of a fire showing on the second story and the roof. Hose lines and thermal cameras were used to locate the fire burning on the second floor in a bedroom near a dresser, fire officials said.

Crews were able to quickly put out the main fire and searched for victims. No human victims were found but a dog was located under a couch. The animal was alive and reunited with its owner, according to the Fire Department.

A ventilation hole was also cut over the fire area to relieve heat and smoke from the building.

The building sustained heavy fire and smoke damage throughout the second floor of the apartment where the fire occurred. The damage was estimated to be $100,000, fire officials said.
