SANTEE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — An elderly woman and six of her cats were rescued by firefighters after flames erupted in her Santee mobile home Wednesday afternoon.

The fire was first reported shortly after noon by someone who saw heavy fire at a mobile home park, according to a spokesperson for the Santee Fire Department. Once crews arrived on scene, they were told that an elderly woman lived in the home engulfed in flames with several cats.

Firefighters were able to extract the woman from the home as they worked to extinguish the fire. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of critical injuries, Santee Fire said. Her current condition is unknown at this time.

Of the woman’s cats, fire crews were able to save six, while an unspecified number were found deceased. The San Diego Humane Society was called to help with the rescued animals.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is now investigating the fire to determine its cause. No additional details were immediately available.
