South Carolina Ports Halts Construction to Clear Vessel Backlog
South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) is addressing a ship backlog caused by a two-day software issue in May and ongoing berth impacts at Wando Welch Terminal. The company has temporarily stopped construction work and is making progress in reducing ship delays and improving port operations. Collaboration with maritime partners has decreased wait times and reduced the number of ships anchored, currently standing at three.
A remarkable feat 50 years later
When he was the governor of Georgia, Jimmy Carter canoed the infamous Bull’s Sluice on the Chattooga River to draw attention to the Chattooga River, shared by Georgia and South Carolina. The year was 1974, the year the federal government recognized the Chattooga as an official wild and scenic river and gave it the protections it enjoys today. And, now 50 years later, a local conservation organization will celebrate the Chattooga as a Wild and Scenic River, and the public is invited to be part of the event. The group Stay Wild Chattooga Conservancy offers an evening of music, a farm-to-table dinner, along with a bar service from 6 to 10 Saturday night, August 3 at the Chattooga Belle Farm, Damascus Church Road, Long Creek.
