Letters to the Editor for July 20, 2024

Lifeguard needs to be praised by governor

    Editor:

Every so often, an event occurs that makes you want to stand up and applaud. Your June 29 headline, “Lifeguard saves 7 people caught in riptide,” tells of such an event.

“Proud” doesn’t begin to describe one’s feelings. The lifeguard, Mariano Martinez, deserves public recognition not only by the county but certainly by the state.

This is the governor’s chance to show Florida’s appreciation for such a heroic action.

I hope someone calls this to his attention.

Trump would be a danger to all of us

    Editor:

Thank you, Robert Fair (6-19 issue), for a most accurate opinion of convicted, crooked Trump and his crooked and convicted roster of felons.

If liar Trump becomes president again, it is guaranteed he will be impeached for the danger and harm being done by him in office.

He is a danger to everyone of us and our many common cause allies around the world.

I totally agree with that letter writer

    Editor:

I read Richard Cannarelli’s letter, ref “Christians are not like Christian Nationalists.”

I am a Catholic Christian and I can only say, “Amen, brother!”

Let’s vote to get our voice back

    Editor:

Sarasota voters can take back their voice.

As of 7/7/2024 on the Sarasotavotes.gov, there are 171,717 registered voters who are NOT Republican and 153,485 registered Republicans.

Our local and state government has the broadest oversight in our daily life. Our county commission has claimed their broad funding changes have represented our county, but I think they have been based solely on the governor’s agenda.

Cutting millions of dollars of funding to Sarasota libraries, numerous health & human services agencies, and the cultural community. All while approving extensive growth.

They allow wealthy developers to reap the benefits of our beautiful community as they slash community services.

There are so many hospital board candidates running that you know the stakes are high. They want a full GOP-led board. Privatization of SMH is something no one will admit to, but it has been spoken of for months.

Why gamble when SMH is such a great hospital. Low risk if you don’t vote any high-risk candidate onto the board.

School Board needs to be about education. Board members should be there to serve in the best interest of the kids, not a rubber stamp to a political agenda.

Sarasota voters can regain the narrative. Voters can take back the County Commission, School Board, and Hospital Board by electing politicians who are not going to run the governor’s agenda.

Elect someone who represents your voice, values, and goals. Elect the candidate who will show up for you when they are serving. Bring balance back.

Here are some facts for you

    Editor:

    1. Government-funded or government investing is your tax money.

    2. You are not canceling debt, but putting it on the tax payers. Canceling the debt would be the colleges dropping the loans.

    3. Inflation “going down” from 9% to 3% is not lowering debt. It’s just rising at a slower rate.

    4. Ten million unvetted illegal immigrants is not a secured border.

    5. Afghanistan was a surrender, not a withdrawal.

    6. Dozens of billions in foreign aid while we are trillions in debt and have homeless veterans living on our streets is despicable.

We need to adhere and enforce our Bill of Rights and add strict term limits.
