    Auburn running back, Brian Battie, takes first steps with cane, months after being shot in head: report

    TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Auburn’s running back, Brian Battie, is taking a big step in his recovery process after he was nearly killed two months ago, according to an update from Auburn’s news outlet .

    Battie’s family posted an update to their GoFundMe page on Saturday, saying Brian took his first steps with a cane on Tuesday.

    “I am overjoyed to share an inspiring moment in Brian’s journey,” the update reads. “After facing the immense challenge of rehabbing after his type of brain injury, without knowing if Brian would walk again, he has achieved something incredible, Brian took his first steps with a cane.”

    Along with this new milestone, the family also shared that Brian is making daily progress. They also expressed gratitude to the team at Sarasota Memorial who have supported and cared for Battie and his family during his recovery.

    “To Brian: your bravery and determination continue to inspire us all,” the GoFundMe update said. “This week marks not just a physical achievement but a reminder of the boundless possibilities that lie ahead. We celebrate this milestone with hearts full of hope and gratitude for every step forward!!!”

    Missing Florida siblings believed to be in danger, authorities say

    On May 18, the former USF player was left critically injured after being shot in the head by 28-year-old Darryl Brookins in the Tallywood Centre Plaza parking lot in Sarasota.

    Brian’s brother, Tommie L. Battie IV, was pronounced dead at the scene. Brian and three others were left hospitalized from the incident.

    According to Sarasota criminal records, Brookins is set to appear at the Case Management Conference on Aug. 14.
