The July 20 Haskell Stakes (G1) at Monmouth Park and the July 27 Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) at Saratoga Race Course are two races utilized as launching pads toward the Aug. 24 Travers Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, but for eligible runners, Saratoga's July 19 Curlin Stakes provides an easier path. A 1 1/8-mile dirt race, the Curlin is restricted to horses who have not won a graded stakes at a mile or longer this year.

It's just over three months since the first juvenile contest of 2024, and already no less than 35 individual freshman sires have been represented by at least one winner. Four of these have black-type winners, and the crop passed a milestone at the weekend when Complexity (Maclean's Music ) became the first of them with a graded stakes winner, his son Mo Plex taking the Sanford Stakes (G3). Mo Plex is out of a mare by rising young broodmare sire Uncle Mo . The second dam, Gold Anklet, is out of Anklet, who won the Florida Oaks (G3) and was second in the Ashland Stakes (G1) and is a half sister to the dam of juvenile grade 2 winner Bel Air Beauty. Complexity was a fast and precocious 2-year-old, winning two of three starts at that age, including the Champagne Stakes (G1). He ran only three times at 3, with one win, but three more outings at 4 produced two victories, including the Kelso Handicap (G2), and a second to another freshman, Win Win Win , in the Forego Stakes (G1).
