SARATOGA, NY ( NEWS10 ) — It’s been 10 years since one of the greatest teams the Capital Region has ever seen, left it’s mark, when the 2014 Union men’s hockey team won the program’s lone national championship. Friday, 10 years later, that team was honored at the Saratoga Race Course.

Most of the team was on hand for the days events, beginning with a meet and greet with fans. They then went to the paddock for a special riders up, before a special race named, “The 2014 Union hockey national championship race.” They presented the trophy after the race, followed by a video presentation.

Still getting the love in the Capital Region means a lot to these guys, 10 years later. “So special for all the guys that were part of this team, coaching staff included,” said 2014 team captain Mat Bodie. “We were, welcomed with open arms from the Capital District, specifically Schenectady. It’s pretty special to come back, see how everyone’s doing. I couldn’t be prouder of the guys and just enjoying this moment anymore.”

“That’s just what Union is,” said Frozen Four MVP and current Carolina Hurricane defender Shayne Gostisbehere. “It’s not only just the school, it’s the community around it. I mean, you could just see here today the support we get. So many people have come up to us just walking through the grounds here and saying how much they appreciated what we did and the memories they have and they remember it like yesterday. It’s instilled in them still. It’s instilled in all of us. We’re just extremely grateful.”
