Kelsey Chugg wins sixth Utah Women’s State Am

SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – Kelsey Chugg joined an elite group of golfers as six-time winners of the Utah State Am.

Chugg won a tight battle with Ali Mulhall, 1-up, to win the tournament played at TalonsCove Golf Course in Saratoga Springs Saturday afternoon.

Chugg joins Florence Halloran, Helen Hofmann Bertagnole, Mary Lou Baker and Marcia Thayne as six-time winners. Only Beverly Nelson has more Utah State Am wins with eight.

“It’s insane,” said Chugg, who is now the associate director of Salt Lake City Golf. “I feel like I’ve been playing for a long time now. I’m getting old, but it’s pretty cool. I was feeling really good about my game coming into this week, and I just played really steady.”

Only five of the 18 holes in the championship match were won by either golfer, with thirteen holes shared.

Mulhall trailed Chugg by one hole through 15, but finally pulled even by sinking a 13-foot putt on the 16th hole.

They were tied going into the 18th hole, when Mulhall’s approach shot sailed into the bunker. While Chugg was able to par the hole, Muhall’s 15-foot par attempt went wide, giving Chugg her sixth victory.

“I’m so excited,” Chugg said. “Nothing’s guaranteed. Obviously, I’ve won five over the years, but it was really good to see my my game stay in good shape, and it was great to be able to play really steady and hold on.”

Chugg also won the Utah Women’s State Am in 2022, 2017, 2015, 2013 and 2012.
