SAULT STE. MARIE — Local students will have a chance this summer to get a taste of outer space with the return of the Higher Orbits Go For Launch event.

Higher Orbits is a space-themed educational program designed to help children become interested in STEM careers. Every time Higher Orbits hosts a Go For Launch event, dozens of students learn more about space experimentation and other sciences, and a few students will also get the chance to create an actual space research program.

"The students will spend three days with us working on a variety of different team challenges, teamwork, leadership, communication, and ultimately, they are going to create an idea that could possibly fly to the International Space Station," said Michelle Lucas, founder of Higher Orbits.

Go For Launch has been to Sault Ste. Marie before. Last time, a group of students calling themselves Space Shell 6 designed an experiment where yeast and various plants were cultivated in zero gravity with limited oxygen and sunlight. That experiment was conducted in space earlier this year.

Besides creating possible experiments, students will also be learning more about the science surrounding space with various activities and lectures from guests, including a real astronaut.

Tony Antonelli has flown multiple missions and has been in space for a cumulative 24 days. He will be mentoring kids through the program and telling stories about his experiences.

Though the program is created through the lens of space travel, the main purpose is to help students get involved in STEM fields of any kind and give them opportunities to learn and be inspired.

"We're not necessarily trying to get them only interested in space science. Space is just a great way to get kids excited about all things STEM," said Lucas.

With the help of local partners and sponsors, such as the Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation, LSSU and the Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District, the event will take place July 23-25 and will include students from grade 8-12. Registration can be found at GoForLaunch.space.
