SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Happy Friday everyone! Unfortunately, it has been a slow week for waves throughout the southeast United States. We have no room to complain though, this June has been filled with surf opportunities with two major swells occurring earlier in the month.

In the Atlantic Basin we are tracking multiple areas for potential development over the next 7 days but the only problem is none of them will track off our coastline producing surf. If you have the itch to paddle out into the water and catch a few waves you will need to pack the biggest board you have with the most float and hopefully luck into a few ankle biters at high tide. Let’s break it down!

This weekend will be a very typical summer-like pattern for us as temperatures will be in the 90s with heat indices reaching the triple digits. With that said, it sounds like this weekend will be a great one to go and sit on the beach but unfortunately there will be some complications. Each afternoon showers and thunderstorms will be likely and some of these storms could be a bit nasty and packed with heavy rain and lots of lightning so make sure if you do head to the beach you keep a close eye too the sky!

Overall, this weekend won’t be great for surfing but if you plan on heading to the beach I recommend going during the morning before storms arrive in the afternoon.

    SURF-CAST

As of Friday afternoon, wave heights are tiny in the ankle to knee-high range. This is due to a lack of storm activity offshore and this trend will likely last through the weekend and much of next week.

    How waves form

Waves form as winds blow over the surface of a body of water. As the wind blows, it transfers its energy to the water causing water molecules to move in a circular motion. As the water molecules move up and down in a circular pattern waves will form and move in the direction that the wind is blowing.

    SATURDAY

A mix of sunshine and clouds will start the day along with mild temperatures in the upper 70s. Winds will be out of the west at 5-10 mph allowing for a clean ocean surface early on. As we head through the late morning hours a few spot showers are possible but the best chance for isolated to scattered showers and storms arrives during the afternoon. Some of these storms could be on the stronger side bringing heavy rainfall and lots of lightning. Winds during the afternoon will switch out of the southeast at 10-15 mph making for choppy conditions later on in the day. High temperatures before storms arrive will return to the 90s with heat index values in the triple digits. Wave heights will be around the 1 foot range.

    UV Index: Extreme

    Rip Current Risk: Moderate

    TIDES:

    Low: 9:03 am

    High: 3:16 pm

    SUNDAY

Once again, a mixture of sunshine and clouds will start the day along with mild temperatures in the low 80s. Rain chances will begin to increase during the late morning hours of Sunday as our next front starts to move closer to the region. For the afternoon, high temperatures will return to the 90s and scattered showers and storms will return to the area. Sunday will likely have more widespread storms than Saturday afternoon. Winds in the morning will be west at 5-10 mph making for clean conditions. During the afternoon, the sea breeze will cause the wind direction to switch to the southeast at 10-20 mph making for a choppy afternoon. With a lack of offshore storm activity, wave heights will remain in the 1 foot range throughout the day.

    UV Index: Extreme

    Rip Current Risk: Moderate

    TIDES:

    Low: 10:00 am

    High: 4:13 pm

Overall, this weekend will be a slow one for waves as a lack of storm activity will keep our wave heights around 1 foot. If you do plan on trying to catch a few waves make sure you pack your largest board to get into the small waves easier. Additionally, the morning hours will likely be the cleanest opportunity as the afternoon sea breeze will likely make for bumpy conditions.

If you are not planning on surfing but want to head down and sit on the beach, Saturday appears to be your best chance as the morning hours will likely have the most sunshine with rain chances holding off for the afternoon. On Sunday, we will have to be on the lookout for storms a bit earlier.

    See you in the water!
