SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Investigators are looking into a fatal crash involving a Savannah Police Department (SPD) officer.

At this time, the officer involved in the accident Wednesday morning has been placed on administrative leave.

Officials say an officer was traveling southbound in an SPD Ford Explorer on Abercorn Street shortly before 5:30 a.m. when they collided with a pedestrian who entered the intersection at Eisenhower Drive.

WSAV has learned the victim was a man, though the Chatham County Coroner’s Office says it has not positively identified the victim.

The accident left Abercorn Street closed between Eisenhower Drive and Douglas Street closed until 8:40 a.m.

The investigation is currently being handled by the Georgia State Patrol.
