Hitting the road: How to prepare for the busiest travel weekend of the summer

SAVANNAH (WSAV) – This week is the anniversary of our nation’s independence, and Americans love a good birthday party. Whether you’re hitting the road, going on vacation, or sticking close to home… it’s going to be crowded and you’ll want to be prepared.

    We got you.

If you’re sticking around, remember that the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire are popular destinations, so there will be a whole bunch of newbies on our streets and highways. Look both ways when crossing, and don’t assume visitors know the rules. Also, it’s a good idea to get provisions because local bars and restaurants may be annoyingly full. As always, take care of your fur babies. They don’t love the sound of explosives and may need a bit more care and comfort.

If you’re driving regionally, remember that there will likely be traffic going in many directions, but especially to the beach. Have mercy on the poor souls from Ohio who have but a tiny window to enjoy a day or two at the shore. Be a kind driver, or at least don’t fall into road rage. As we said in the 70’s… Arrive Alive! Leave early so you can listen to some Led Zeppelin and just chill. Get a gas app so you know where to fuel up, and pack snacks so you don’t get hungry.

If you’re catching a flight today, bless your heart. Officials at Savannah/Hilton Head Airport tell me they’re ready, but say many people are surprised when they get to the airport and see a gazillion people at 5:00 a.m. They shared some tips to make the summer’s busiest travel period a little less “crazy-pants”:

    • Arrive 2-3 hours before your boarding time.
    • Allow extra time for traffic on I-95 and the unenjoyable search for a parking space.
    • If using a ride-share service, make arrangements in advance to ensure you get a driver.
    • Don’t circle the arrival deck. Use the cell phone lot to wait for pick-ups.
    • Expect delays. Bring snacks and a neck pillow. Charge your phone. If things go smoothly… rejoice!

Finally, TSA would like everyone to familiarize themselves with the current list of no-no’s:

    • Fireworks/Bangsnaps
    • Firearms/Ammunition
    • Ax/Hatchett
    • Bear spray
    • Illegal drugs or alcohol over 140 proof

Interestingly you are allowed to carry on antlers, artificial skeleton bones, and bocce balls… but just because you can do something, doesn’t always mean you should. Click here for a full list of items that may result in side-eye, confiscation or civil penalties.

Safe travels, y’all.. and happy birthday to the Big A.
