A pedestrian was killed around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, after being hit by a Savannah Police Department (SPD) car near the interesection of Abercorn and Eisenhower streets.

According to a social media post by SPD, the officer was traveling southbound on Abercorn Street when he collided with the pedestrian, who entered the intersection at Eisenhower. Abercorn was closed between Eisenhow and Douglas streets until about 9:30 a.m.

SPD spokesman Neil Penttila confirmed the accident occurred but referred all further updates to the Georgia State Patrol, which is handling the investigation. GSP has not returned a call for comment.

    This is a developing story.
