Just purchased a boat? Here’s how to get it registered in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Savannah is located on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and has plenty of rivers and streams that flow throughout the area that’s perfect for boat trips.

However, all mechanically propelled vessels and any sailboats more than 12 ft. in length used on Georgia waters must be registered with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Boat owners must register a new or used vessel that has never been registered in Georgia, renew their existing registration, or transfer registration to a new owner.

To register your boat, you need:

• Valid driver’s license or other form of identification
• Proof of vessel ownership, such as a bill of sale or a dealer’s invoice
• A signed Georgia vessel registration application
• Method of payment. Registration fees may vary depending on vessel specifications and other factors.

• Log in or create a new account.
• Follow the prompts to register a new vessel or renew your registration.

• Depending on your situation, it may take up to four to six weeks to receive your registration.
• You will receive a registration card and two decals. A decal must be adhered to each side of your boat and the registration card must be kept on the boat.
• You must renew your registration every 3 years.
