SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Greenbriar Children’s Center is hosting A Walk of Community this month to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the nonprofit.

The event will be held in partnership with the founders-leaders from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter and First African Baptist Church.

The event is set for Saturday, July 13, at 7:30 a.m., beginning at First African Baptist Church (23 Montgomery Street in Savannah), with community members starting to gather at 6:30 a.m.

The three-mile walk will end at Greenbriar’s main campus (3709 Hopkins Street in Savannah).

Nonprofit leaders say Greenbriar was founded as an orphanage for Black children when there were no other options for them.

“Young women from the Alpha Kappa Alpha, Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter, worked with the

Reverend Ralph Mark Gilbert of First African Baptist Church, along with other local church

leaders, to find funding to help create this institution,” said Gena Taylor, executive director of Greenbriar. “This walk represents their journey of faith to create a place where all children could feel safe and be cared for.”

Walkers are encouraged to register online at greenbriarchildrenscenter.org.
