Earlier this week, rumors that La Scala Ristorante was on the verge of closing proved true. On July 2, real estate firm Engel & Völkers Savannah hung a banner on the iron fence and issued a press release announcing that the pink 7,000-square-foot mansion at 119 E. 37th St. was up for sale. It is listed for $3.3 million .

The two-story mansion was built in 1898 by an attorney and served as a home for the nuns of Sacred Heart and later as a florist shop. Restaurateurs Donald Lubowicki and Jeffrey Downey, proprietors of Circa 1875 French Bistro in downtown Savannah, meticulously renovated and restored the historic home, upgrading its mechanical systems and outdoor spaces for the 120-seat upscale Italian eatery. The estate features six dining rooms, a brick wine cellar, and a ballroom that was the former Sacret Heart Convent Chapel ― still sporting hand-painted murals and stained glass.
