SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Local leaders of the Democratic Party gathered in Johnson Square Thursday to encourage people to vote for the Biden-Harris administration.

Those leaders included Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, House Rep. Anne Allen Westbrook and Chatham County District 6 Commissioner Aaron Whitely.

Each of them commended Biden’s action to protect women’s rights, support veterans, invest money into this area, and more.

“We think that President Biden and Vice President Harris have the best plan for moving our country forward,” Johnson said.

Westbrook spent much of her time at the microphone speaking on women’s rights.

“These most personal and intimate choices are sacred and protected, not criminalized,” she said. “Georgians believe in freedom. We believe in autonomy. This November, we will re-elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and protect reproductive rights once and for all.”

Whitely believes Americans, especially the working class, cannot trust Trump. He spoke negatively of the conservative policy called “Project 2025.”

“It’s a wide-ranging blueprint for a second Trump presidency that includes the plans to raise costs on families, to raise taxes for the middle class, and to rig the economy for Trump and his ultra-wealthy friends,” he said. “As President Biden continues to fight and make life better for the working class, Trump is spending every day fighting for himself and his personal power.”

While they were out advocating for the Democratic Party, all of the local leaders stressed the importance of making it to the polls, since there will also be local positions to vote for.

It is noted that during the press conference, a group of what appeared to be homeless individuals made an effort to interrupt the mayor. They made statements that he does not care about the homeless.

    Johnson took time to respond.

“Cooling centers are open. The City of Savannah has made historic improvements and investments, partly because of some of the funds from the infrastructure law, to not only be able to create cooling centers, not only to create day centers across this community, but also street teams to make sure that our homeless neighbors have what they need,” Johnson said.

He added that homelessness will never be criminalized in the city.
