SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Top teens from across the country visited Savannah this week to build leadership skills and form connections.

The National Humanitarian Organization and Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. invited 28 students to attend their Vivien Coe Richard Leadership Academy being held at Savannah State University. Teens attending the Leadership Academy event made presentations Friday to show what they were able to learn.

“I was in the robotics track. So, I was learning the parts of building a robot and learning how to operate it. And from this week, I just learned that it’s really important to get to know the people around you and to take every opportunity possible,” Miranda McCullough said.

The academy teaches the principles of STEAM, which stands for science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.

The classes offered included marketing, robotics, marine science and entrepreneurship.

“I’m on the business track. So, I learned a lot about entrepreneurship and how to critically think for myself because there’s no rule book to business, and there’s no specific way to run your business,” Makenzi Henderson said.

Students also visited the SCAD Film Studio, The Beach Institute and Gulf Stream to learn more about banking and social justice from speakers.
