SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Savannah Chatham County Public Schools’ Back to School Expo attracted thousands to the Savannah Civic Center, giving families everything they need to know before the first bell.

“We’re excited about the new year,” said White Bluff Elementary principal Robert Lewis. “We’re excited about the vision of the school and what we’re going to do for our kids.”

Lewis says he’s been able to talk one-on-one with several families today, something that sets this event apart from every other Open House.

“They’re excited that they’re able to meet me and ask those questions that you don’t normally get to ask your principal on any given day,” said Lewis.

Families from all 55 schools in the district were there to learn about registration, lunch programs and extracurriculars. Some new parents even shopping for the best school in the district.

Dr. Angie Lewis, executive director for the Office of Career Readiness, says they try to make it a fun, family-friendly event every year.

“We do a lot of learning and teaching, but we want them to know that it’s fun and it’s interactive and it’s hands-on,” said Dr. Lewis.

Some families were able to grab free uniforms for their students, with school leaders giving away supplies and books as well.
