Several LCO Migiziwag boys cross-country runners finished their season at the WIAA Division 3 sectional at Hidden Greens North golf course in Solon Springs Saturday Oct. 26. In the 5-kilometer event, sophomore Darian Goodsky placed 91st in 23:31, junior Gary Clause was 94th in 27:39, freshman Ninde Goodsky was 95th in 30:42 and junior Charles Trepanier was 97th in 33:40.
Gymnasts compete at Fitchburg
Hayward area gymnasts competed in the Gym Stars Invite at Fitchburg Oct. 12-13 as part of The Kipsters team out of Deutsch’s Gymnastics Training Center in Rice Lake. In Feel Four, Junior B, Natalie McCue scored a personal best 33.15 points all-around, including personal best scores of 8.9 in the vault, 7.0 in the bars, 8.45 in the beam and 8.8 in the floor exercise, and scored team points in the vault and floor exercise. In Level Five, Juniors, Annika Schlafke placed sixth overall with a score of 31.45. She scored 8.45 in the vault (sixth), 6.6 in the bars (fifth), 8.15 in the beam (second place) and 8.25 (sixth) in the floor exercise, all personal bests.
Cable's Anderson tells of running marathons world-wide
Retired Cable school teacher and author Jim Anderson, 72, has switched to running half-marathons after completing a marathon in each of the 50 states, plus the Yukon and Quebec in Canada and places such as Scotland, Bhutan, Australia, the Great Wall in China, Patagonia and South Africa. Anderson spoke and presented a slide show at the Sawyer County Historical Society’s quarterly meeting Oct. 24 and signed copies of his book “Discovering America One Marathon at Time.” ...

The defending USA national champion Wisconsin Selects Girls U-19 hockey team will host three games this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 2-3, at the Hayward Sports Center. Due to scheduling conflicts with key competition vendors, the Lumberjack World Championships is changing the dates of their event in 2025 to ensure that they continue to provide the highest quality competition to athletes and spectators. The 65th annual Lumberjack World Championships will take place Thursday through Saturday, July 17-19. The Lumberjack Run will take place on Championship Saturday morning, July 19. School board approves tax levy, annual budget
At their Monday Oct. 21 meeting, the Hayward Community Schools Board of Education approved an annual tax levy of $4.89 per $1,000 of property value. Canes volleyball finishes regular season
The Hayward Hurricanes volleyball team lost a match to undefeated Barron on Senior Night at the RJS Gym Tuesday Oct. 15. The Golden Bears won three sets, 25-12, 25-19, 25-11. The leaders for the Canes were Grace Schmidt with seven kills, Melody Isham with two aces and 18 assists, Reese Sheehan with 15 digs and Abby Laird with one block. On Thursday Oct. 17, the Canes traveled to Chetek-Weyerhaeuser, where the host Bulldogs won the match 3-1. Colby Sprenger had seven kills, Rachel Miller and Melody Isham each had two aces, Isham had 18 assists and Sheehan had 17 digs. The Hurricanes finished their regular season in fourth place in the Heart O’ North Conference at 4-5.
