Hayward Hurricanes boys basketball team members received kudos, awards and cheers from their coaches, teammates and parents at a season awards program Monday March 4 in the HHS Commons.
Coach Pat Harrison praised varsity team members, who included two players named to the Heart O’ North All-Conference team: Senior guard Nate Harrison, second team; and sophomore guard Lucas Hansen, the “team’s best athlete,” honorable mention.
The team’s top scorers this season (conference games) were Nate Harrison, 11.7 points per game; Tyler Eaton, 11.1 ppg; and Lucas Hansen, 10.2 ppg.
Each senior captain spoke of this year’s season: They were Nate Harrison, Micah Bacon, Grason Crust, Miles McCallum (team leader in rebounds), and Luke Snider—who had best free throw percentage (12 for 19).
Snider “did everything with a smile on his face,” said Coach Harrison.
“We had our ups and downs the past couple seasons, but these guys made everything enjoyable,” Snider said.
“Believe in yourself and your teammates, that you can be great, something special,” said McCallum.
Each senior received a photo banner and a plaque in appreciation for their dedication and commitment to the Hayward basketball family.
The juniors were Wyatt Lobitz, Bradley Young, Ben Laird (team leader in charges taken), :”fearless” Tyler Eaton (leader in steals), Kyle Gajewski, and Dawson Jorczak (leader in blocked shots).
The sophomores were Ryker Chipman, Preston Sullivan, Lucas Hansen, Cade Schlapper, and Fred Principe (“biggest improvement over last year”).
Coach Sam Yoder honored the JV team players, who included McKayl Taylor, Braeden Young, Victor Enk and Gavin Gasper.
Coach Jordan Baker presented awards to this year’s C team members: Brendan Young, Dylan Lobitz, Bryce Bauer, Robert Droessler, Davin Suo, Caden Thompson, Jack Marks and Micah Teran.
